KORBUT: CHINA WILL WIN EVERYTHING
By Matt McGeehan, PA Sport, Hong Kong
Olga Korbut expects China to take a golden clean sweep of the gymnastics events at this summer's Olympic Games.
The hosts are targeting top spot in the medal table having finished second to the United States in Athens four years ago with 32 golds.
Only one of those golds came in gymnastics - where a total of 14 are available - but Korbut, who won four Olympic golds for the Soviet Union, expects the discipline to prove far more fruitful in Beijing.
"They will win everything," she told PA Sport.
"This Olympic Games is China's and they are ready. This is their time to show."
Korbut's name is synonymous with the sport.
As a 17-year-old she bounced back from disappointment in the all-round event at the 1972 Games in Munich to win the floor and the beam with exquisite displays.
She added a third gold in the team competition, with silver in the uneven bars, to capture the imagination of the sporting public.
The 53-year-old, who also claimed a gold and a silver at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, is credited with an explosion in the popularity of the sport and cooling tensions in the Cold War.
And she is intent on leaving a further legacy.
Korbut was on tour in Hong Kong to showcase her school, with three young pupils exhibiting their talents.
"I help people to be even more beautiful," she added. "They need to feel that somebody loves them.
"People fell in love with me and they still remember me after 30 years or whatever. This is what it's about.
"I need to give something."
