Mark Cuban made headlines again for another ridiculous statement/comment.
“If she is the best on the board, I will take her,” Cuban told ESPN Dallas. ”I’ve thought about it. I’ve thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.”
Now before I start, don’t get me wrong Brittney Griner is a great basketball player and will most likely go down as one of, if not the best, women to play basketball. But the key word that Cuban is missing out on is…women.
Comparing Her Height and Weight:
Griner is 6’8 which is taller than the average NBA player’s height of 6′ 6.98″ which was recorded in November of 2007 by the NBA. However, she’s 207 lbs which is 14 less pounds than the NBA’s average weight of 221 lbs. That study was also conducted by the NBA in 2007.
Now yes, those calculations may have changed since then but, if they did, they haven’t change much as over the years the NBA’s studies conducted before 2007 have only changed by centimeters and pounds. As seen here. Comparing Her Athleticism (Strength, Leaping Ability, Agility, etc.):
Now while Griner’s height will help her on paper, players in the past such as, Spud Webb (5’7), Muggsy Bogues (5’3), and more have proven that height and weight won’t make you successful or prevent you from being successful in the NBA as being very athletic plays a huge role.
Now how the NBA judges prospects athleticism is by their various combine tests. These tests consist of the bench press, which measures the player’s strength, the vertical jump which measures the player’s jumping ability, the 3/4 court sprint, which measures the players speed and agility. There other tests they do as well however, those are the three main tests.
So let’s compare.
DYST Now’s Mike Ortiz Jr. spoke with Baylor’s Director of Athletic Communications, Julie Bennett, who provided DYST Now with Griner’s test results.
Griner’s Bench Press: 132lbs/60kg
Griner’s Vertical Jump: 24” – 10’11.5” (height reached with no step)不助跑弹跳也就是垂直弹跳61厘米,垂直弹跳到达334. 两者一减也可得到站立摸高273!!!
Comparing Griner’s Bench Press:
Now comparing Griner’s results to last year’s combine results Griner’s bench press doesn’t even compare to any of the prospects as the NBA’s official combine bench press weight is 185 lbs. Now Griner wouldn’t be the only player that wouldn’t be able to bench the NBA’s 185 lb weight as former draft prospect and current NBA star, Kevin Durant couldn’t lift the weight either. However, Griner is no Kevin Durant. Comparing Griner’s Vertical Jump:
As for Griner’s vertical jump of 24 inches? It doesn’t compare either as among all prospects from last year’s combine; Griner ranks last. The closest height that Griner comes to, is former North Carolina player, John Henson who reached 25.5 inches. Henson currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks and averages 5.5 ppg. and 4.2 rpg.
Now while Griner doesn’t measure up in the test results, her 7’4 wingspan does as it’s the same as Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel who’s expected to declare for this years, 2013 NBA draft. Griner also has a standing reach of 8 feet and 11.5 inches. 273㎝!!!!
So Can Griner Make It?
Griner wouldn’t be the first women player to try out for the NBA as In 1979, Ann Myers tried out for the Indiana Pacers after her career at UCLA ended.
Myers despite not playing in a single NBA game, did get a $50,000 contract by the Pacers. However, after a three day tryout, she would be informed that she didn’t make the team.
Now with Griner, I think she’d make a team or at least play in the Summer League. However, I believe she would make the team because of her being a women and not because of her skill. Now what I mean by that is, team’s would put Griner on their team to make ticket sales and jersey sales as she would be put on their team more as a traveling circus act rather than a great asset to their team.
Which is why I don’t agree with her trying to play in the NBA because, owners, like Cuban, will take Griner, suit her up and put her out there just to make a couple extra bucks. Let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to see a women compete against the top men’s basketball players in the world? It would be like a Harlem Globetrotters game, time ten.
However, that’s not what the NBA is or certainly what the NBA wants. We already have enough scripted “professorial sports” as it is with all of the WWE shows.
Cuban is a business man and if he sees a way to make money he’s going to do it. Cuban wouldn’t be putting Griner on his team for her talents but he’d be putting Griner on his team for ticket sales, jersey sales, tv commercials, and who knows what else.
So Griner if you’re okay with being some sort of circus act/WWE stunt, then go to the NBA. But if you’re looking to make a career out of basketball then go to the WNBA, become the first pick in the draft on April 15th, go and play for the Phoenix Mercury, and write the rest of the story from there.
Sorry Griner you’re name is not Danica Patrick.
