The U.S. Women’s National Team lost to Evergrande Volleyball Club 26-24, 25-23, 21-25, 26-24 on Jan. 31 in a scrimmage prior to the official exhibition match on Feb. 2 at Guangzhou, China.

Evergrande, a professional team in the Chinese pro league coached by 2008 U.S. Olympic Games Head Coach Lang Ping, came away with key points during the scrimmage in winning all three of its sets by the minimum two points. Evergrande took a 16-10 lead in the opening set only to have Team USA cut the deficit in half at 21-18 and tie the frame at 24-all before Evergrande won the final two points. The Americans led 8-4 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts of the second set, then Evergrande made a final push after being down 21-18 to win 25-23. The U.S. rallied from an 8-6 deficit in the third set to gain a 16-15 edge at the second technical timeout. After leading 21-19 in the fourth, the U.S. scored four of the final six points to win 25-21. Team USA held an 8-5 advantage at the opening break of the fourth set, but Evergrande overcame a 21-20 deficit to win 26-24.

Team USA will now focus on its scheduled exhibition match with Evergrande, which includes U.S. Women’s National Team players Nicole Davis (Stockton, Calif.) and Christa Harmotto (Aliquippa, Pa.). Davis was the libero for the U.S. Olympic Team that won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The exhibition match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. local time on Feb. 2 at the new Guangzhou Gymnasium in Guangzhou. The match will be aired on Chinese national television on CCTV, which is available in some United States television markets. The match can also be viewed online at http://sports.cntv.cn.

Jill Collymore (Bellevue, Wash.) led the U.S. in the Evergrande scrimmage with 16 points via 11 kills, two aces and three blocks from her opposite position. Cheryl Weaver (Washington, D.C.) added 12 kills on 22 attempts and three blocks for 15 points as she connected for a .455 hitting efficiency and 54.5 kill percent from her middle blocker position. Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) scored all 11 of her points on kills while splitting opposite duties with Collymore.

Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) chipped in seven points with six kills on 13 attacks with only one error to go with a block and seven digs. She added a 69 percent positive reception percent on a team-leading 26 attempts. Mekana Barnes (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) contributed a team-high four blocks to go with two kills and an ace for seven points in her middle blocker role.

Tracy Stalls (Denver) charted three kills on five errorless swings to go with a block and ace for five points at middle blocker. Angie Pressey (Lake Mary, Fla.) matched her point total with five points, including three blocks and two aces and a team-high 12 digs on the outside. Katie Kimmich (Lakeside, Calif.) and Ellen Herman (Toledo, Ohio) each added four points at outside hitter. Herman had a 92 positive percent on 12 reception attempts, while Kimmich tallied a team-leading 53 excellent reception percent (73 positive percent) on 15 attempts.

Bryn Kehoe (North Bend, Ohio) set the offense in the first two sets, leading the Americans to a .233 hitting efficiency and 39.0 kill percent. She added three individual points of her own in the match, including two aces. Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.) tacked on four points in starting the final two sets at setter while leading the offense to a 40.3 kill percent.

Jessica Fine (Tarzana, Calif.) and Tama Miyashiro (Kaneohe, Hawaii) split duties at libero with each providing six digs. Fine had a 43 percent positive service reception mark on 14 attempts, but was positive on seven of her eight attempts in the fourth set.

Starters for the match were Hodge and Kimmich at outside hitter, Weaver and Barnes at middle blocker, Hughes at opposite and Kehoe at setter. Miyashiro started at libero. Except for Weaver who started all four sets, the starters played just the first two sets. Pressey and Herman started the third and fourth sets at outside hitter, Stalls came in at middle blocker for Barnes, Glass replaced Kehoe, Collymore switched with Hughes at opposite and Fine played the final two sets.

Harmotto tallied 10 points while starting and playing in just the first two sets for Evergande. She recorded six kills on 10 swings to go with a team-high four blocks. Davis was Evergrande’s libero and had an 87 positive reception percent, including a 53 excellent reception percent on 15 chances. She added a team-high six digs in the victory.

The U.S. Women’s National Team dominated the net defense with an 18-11 block advantage, including a 5-1 mark in the fourth set. Team USA held a slim 6-5 advantage in service aces and 42-33 edge in digs. However, Evergrande took advantage of 15 U.S. service errors to its own eight. The Americans also had 28 hitting errors to Evergrande’s 25.
