COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 6, 2008) – USA Volleyball announced today the 22 players selected to the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Training Team, which will train May 15-18 at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
After the training session in Atlanta, the team will be narrowed down to 12 players who will represent USA Volleyball as its 2008 U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team at the NORCECA U-18 Continental Championship at Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The NORCECA event takes place July 3-11.
Jim Stone (Columbus, Ohio), a retired head women’s volleyball coach at The Ohio State University, will serve as head coach of the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team that will compete at the NORCECA U-18 Continental Championship July 3-11 in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. He will be assisted by University of West Florida Head Coach Melissa Wolter (Pensacola, Fla.) and TCA Volleyball Club Director and Head Coach Neil Mason (Newport Coast, Calif.). The team trainers will be Daryl Tamashiro (Waipahu, Hawai’i), Blaine Tendler (Burlington, N.C.) and Shawn Taylor (Valparaiso, Ind.).
The 22-player training team includes 19 players who were invited to the USA Volleyball Select A1 roster. A total of 17 of those players earned a medal at the 2007 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in various divisions.
All 10 members of the USA Select Red Team that won gold in 2007 USA Volleyball High Performance Championship International Junior Division have been selected to the 2008 U.S. Girls’ Youth National Training Team. Jennifer Bonilla (Reseda, Calif.), Tori Dixon (Savage, Minn.), Anna Dorn (Munster, Ind.), Kristina Graven (San Jose, Calif.), Madelyn Hutson (Brentwood, Tenn.), Deja McClendon (Louisville, Ky.), Lauren Plum (Poway, Calif.), Amy Scullion (Salem, Ohio), Carly Thomas (Swansea, Ill.) and Ashley Wittman (Skakopee, Minn.) were part of the winning USA Select Red Team. McClendon was tabbed as the International Junior Division most valuable player.
The USA Select Blue Team, which includes 2008 U.S. Girls’ Youth Training Team members Jazmine Orozco (Lakewood, Calif.), Erica Denney (Centennial, Colo.) and Molly Kreklow (Hamlake, Minn.), won the 2007 International Youth Division at the HP Championships. Orozco earned the 2007 USA Volleyball High Performance Championship most valuable player award in the International Youth Division.
Kelly Reeves (San Diego), Adrienne Gehan (Dallas) and Carly Wopat (Goleta, Calif.), all silver medalists for USA Select White in the International Youth Division of the 2007 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships, have moved up to the 2008 U.S. Girls’ Youth National Training Team. Krista Vansant (Redlands, Calif.), who won a silver medal in the National Youth Division of the 2007 HP Championships, was also selected for this year’s U.S. Girls’ Youth National Training Team.
Kaitlyn Leary (Parma, Ohio), Elizabeth McMahon (Liberty Township, Ohio) and Kylann Scheidt (Knoxville, Tenn.) are new to the USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline.
“We have assembled an outstanding training team roster for the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team program,” USA Volleyball Managing Director of Indoor High Performance Tom Pingel said. “The process was challenging based on the high talent level that participated in the tryouts for the program. It is good to see players continue to develop and make the jump from the Select age group to the Youth age group. Just as important, I am excited to see new players get involved in the USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline.”
The Southern California Region has the most participants with seven players, while North Country has three players.
