Zenit KAZAN qualified for the 1/4 Finals
Kazan, Russia, February 18, 2009. Russian Zenit KAZAN won the second match of the 8th finals of the Men’s CEV Indesit European Champions’ League. On Wednesday the current winner of the tournament won on its site ACH Volley BLED (3-0, 25-18, 25-20, 25-19). In contrast to the first match the second one was not the serious struggle. Russian team won quite easily.
Volleyball matches have never started so late in Kazan. The time of the match had been changed because of the TV broadcasting and began at 8 p.m. according to the Moscow time. But that fact did not frighten the fans and nearly four thousand spectators came to the match. Accompanied by loud applause, Lloy Ball was awarded as the best server of the group phase.
The match started with numerous mistakes of the host team, that helps ACH Volley BLED lead the score – 4:1. Russians managed to break forward only after the first technical time-out when Nikolay Apalikov demonstrates perfect blocks – 9:8. The players of the host team stabilize their serve and the attacks of the Slovenians are getting less and less harmful. Alexey Bovduy and Alexander Korneev easily break the block of their guests – 14:11.
The Slovenian team has no evident chance of turning the events around. Owing to the serves of Lloy Ball Zenit KAZAN scores four points – 23:17. Bovduy ends the party with a perfect attack and ace.
Clayton Stanley is active in second set: his attacks are fruitful and the blocks bring points to Kazan – 8:6. But Slovenians do not let their competitor break forward. Minimal mistakes let them make the score equal, Mitja Gasparini brings his team forward – 16:15. His vis-à-vis Clayton Stanley gives a series of cannon-ball services that change the situation radically – the host team leads 20:17. This is the key moment of the set, ended by Korneev – 25:20.
In the third set Russians crush the competitor. They manage with absolutely everything, as against to the guests. After the attack of Bovduy the score is 10:4. Bogomolov blocks Flajs – 16:11. The head coach of Zenit KAZAN Vladimir Alekno makes a double substitution.
The setter of the Kazan team Pavel Zaytsev shoots the ball to the ground of the competitor, and the opposite Alexei Cheremisin makes an ace – 22:17. Alexei Bovduy brings his team to the 1/4 Finals.
- The match in Ljubljana was equal,- says the head coach of ACH Volley BLED Glenn Hoag. – But today our competitor played very well. And we could not manage both with his blocks and attacks. However, I do not have pretensions to my guys.
- I hoped that my team would play well, but I did not suppose that we could win in three sets,- says the head coach of Zenit KAZAN Vladimir Alekno. – This is great, taking into account that now the team is not in a very good shape.
The best scorers of the match became the opposite players of the both teams Clayton Stanley and Mitya Gasparini who scored 15 points. Four points on the block of Nikolay Apalikov are also should be noted.
