Zenit KAZAN lost the title of the champion Kazan, Russia, Marсh 11, 2009. Russian Zenit KAZAN won the second match of the 4th finals of the Men’s CEV Indesit European Champions’ League. On Wednesday the defending champion of the tournament won on its site to Lube Banca Marche MACERATA (3:2: 20-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 15-11). The Kazan team could not win even the first set and that deprived them of the chance to continue fighting in the tournament.
The defeat in Italy left no escape for the Kazan tem. To qualify for the Final Four and continue defending its title in the return match Kazan has to win four straight sets: four sets to make the score equal and the “golden” sets.
The goal is ultimately difficult. To win a team like Lube Banca MACERATA with such a score… Only magic can help! Last weekend Italians became the leaders of the national championship and now they are on the rise, whereas Kazan has the steak of bad luck: they lost four of the five latest matches of the Russian Super League. Still, the team, as well as the fans is in the mood to win. Nothing is impossible!
The beginning of the match is awful for the host team: 2-6. The Olympic champion Rodrigao and Martin Lebl block the leader of Kazan Clayton Stanley and Alexander Korneev twice. Zenit hardly manages with the serves of the competitors and attacks of the opposite player Igor Omrcen. The attacks of Nickolay Apalikov and Alexander Korneev is the only gun that has the Kazan. Despite this, the score becomes 10:5.
The hope is then given by perfect attacks of Clayton Stanley – 13:16. But the Russian players make two miserable mistakes – 13:18. The situation is getting worse. Korneev serves the ball in out, the ball of Cheremisin touches the net and the score is miserable – 16:22.
Omrcen attacks and Macerata has the set point – 24:19. Matteo Martino brings his team to the Final Four. This is the end of the European season for the Kazan team. Zenit KAZAN lost their champion title.
Now the end of the match means nothing at all. Lube Banca MACERATA accomplished their goal and now it is time to relax: Martino substitutes the libero Mirko Corsano. The head coach of Zenit KAZAN Vladimir Alekno also makes experiments: the Olympic champions Lloy Ball and Clayton Stanley are substituted.
But the Italian team is still stronger – 8:3, 16:11. However, Zenit KAZAN manages to change the situation. Cheremisin makes the score equal (18:18), then his attack bring the team forward – 22:20. The team wins the set with the help of Shpilev – 25:23.
The beginning of the third set is failed – 3:8. It does not help the Kazan team despite the efforts of Chremisin and Shpilev – 23:24.
Zenit KAZAN is not willing to be defeated and try to act better. Shpilev and Abrosimov show good results – 18:14. At the end Korneev and Cheremisin make the score of the match equal.
In the third set Kazan has a lead – 8:6. The stable serve of Cheremisin gives Kazan a chance to take the pas – 13:8. The players help each other, Korneev attacks successfully. Cheremisin performs an ace and the win of the Russian team becomes more real – 13:8. The match is ended by Shpilev. Unfortunately, this win is miserable…
The best score of the match became the opposite of Zenit KAZAN Alexey Cheremisin who scored 20 points. The player of the guest team Andrea Bartoletti scored 17 points.
The head coach of Zenit KAZAN Vladimir Alekno says: “We failed this season in the CEV Indesit Champions’ League. It was almost impossible to win with the score of 3:0 today. The guys were very nervous and the math was not started successfully. But the first match in Italy was much more bad.
The head coach of Lube Banca MACERATA Ferdinando de Giorgi gives the following comment: “We were concentrated from the very beginning of the match and accomplished our goal in the first set. The continuation of the match was not important”
