This was an exciting match worthy of a contest between host world No. 2 China and No. 1 USA. China took the first set as expected by the fervent fans, but after the 1.86m setter Shen Jingsi helped China wrap up the second set, coach Lang Ping made the terrible mistake of using setter Ding Xia again to start the third match which was virtually lost by the time she was replaced again. Ding Xia is China's shortest setter at 1.80m and she suffers from losing form and not setting effectively for the attackers as the match progresses (a problem she had already at her club Liaoning which has not won any league titles). Moreover, she was substitute setter at last year's World Cup and requiring her to be main setter this time round is asking too much of her. Fortunately for China, Lang Ping did not use her again for the rest of the match. One reason why the USA won the third set is their greater ability than China to turn defense into attack. Luckily China also showed this ability toward the end of the fourth set. Teenager Gong Xiangyu was China's savior with her flawless service for the last few points, and China's gritty performance ensured it won 3-1 by a narrow 25-23 margin in the fourth set without the need for a decider. There will be lessons learnt from this match for China and the USA as they prepare for the Olympics.

The reception was bad in the third set so it is hard to have much quick attacks. I don't think the setter should be blamed.

If you follow Chinese women volleyball closely, you would have known how much versatility Ding Xia brings to the team. She had a bad game today, but a lot was due to poor reception. She is shorter but she is a lot quicker than Shen, she can set for 2,3 and 4, she is also a much better server and defender. Shen is more reliable than Ding when setting for outside spiker (at 4) and Shen is a better blocker, but she doesn't know how to set for middle blockers or the opposite players, which would be a huge offensive weapon if China picks up this skill. There is a reason why Jenny Lang Ping made Ding the starter setter, it was based on the performances during the China-Japan friendly games in April, which was the first time this year we saw the team after their winter training camp. Ding was by far the most effective setter among all 3 setters on the team. China needs to leverage both Ding and Shen, or even Wei qiuyue when healthy, if they want to win the gold in Rio! Best of luck!

i think Lan Ping knows what she is doing..since she taking over china become very strong. i think Ding xia is good ..Yao Di play in montreax champ it wasnt good at all But I know we dont see WeiQY today instead. see Xu and Liu xiao tung and Yangfangxu or zheng those do nothing. Hui is ok for backup Liuxiaotung bad player.

Ding Xia is good against Asian teams like Japan but not against tougher and taller opponents, especially world no. 1 USA or even Russia. Indeed, Wei Qiuyue is better than her against such opponents as she is mentally stronger and better in her distribution with more international experience.

Why then was Ding Xia not used again for the rest of the match while Zhang Changning, who had bad reception a few times and mishits which cost points, remained throughout the match? The problem is the setter's ability as about 80 percent of attacks are orchestrated by the setter.

Zhang changing is not a very good player. I can't think of anything she can do that's consistent. She also tends to not know where she is hitting.

+Darvid Koh agreed that Ding Xia had a bad game and she is not as experienced as Wei. (Btw, I think these two should make the Rio games) Poor reception played a role in her less impressive distribution, also she is not usually paired up with these two middle blockers (Ding plays with Yan Ni and Shen with Yuan with their respective clubs, plus Shen had more years with the national team under her belt) not to make more excuses for Ding, she needs to improve her stability and learn how to feed better to other middle blockers other than Yan Ni. Once China can go fast and unpredictable with middle blockers hits/spikes, they are hard to beat since they have Zhu Ting at 4.

+Darvid Koh Zhang had her problems on the receiving end, but she is a much improved spiker. She is an offense force though sometimes predictable. But she is better than the other two reserves (Liu Xiaotong and Liu yanhan) on both offensive and defensive ends, I don't think Lang Ping had a choice in terms of substituting her out. If Hui ruoqi, a better overall player, was available then we may have seen her. Zhang is very talented and young so she is expected to make mistakes, I would take her over the other spiders as the other spiker (alongside with Zhu Ting) to Rio, even over Hui. That being said, she needs to improve her defense and does it quickly! All the best to the Chinese team, high hopes!

In fact, neither #5 Shen Jingsi nor #16 Ding Xia is the best setter for China's women volleyball team, #6 Wei Qiuyue is actually the heart and soul of this team as former captain and the best setter. However she is injured and take a rest in Beijing at the moment! I really believe whether China can win the gold in Rio is depended on her!!!

Great showing for both teams. I still think Kelly Murphy is a better overall player than Karsta Lowe. She thinks when she plays, unlike Lowe who only relies on her power hits. Murphy is also A LOT better at pikes. I hope Karch uses Murphy more again

I think I would agree. I think it's interesting though that he named the both of them in this game. Reckon he's probs tryna decide which of them to take to Rio? Coz I think Nicole Fawcett will most likely going to be the other opposite

+Jonah Tan Yeah I was thinking that too. Fawcett has been way more consistent than both Lowe and Murphy. I also think that Fawcett's Olympic spot is pretty much secured. It's now between Karsta or Kelly. (I hope it's Kelly!!)

+Jonah Tan agreed, Murphy should be the other opposite, Lowe is younger and taller but less versatile.

After watching all the top medal contenders in action in the Grand Prix (although Serbia sent only its B team), China seems the strongest team of the lot. Although Brazil was also undefeated, Brazil's opponents were all B teams. So based on form, China has the best chance of winning gold.

i saw that too,LOL

Bad News: Zhu Ting plays like crap.
Good News: China still wins.
Xu YL is very slow moving especially laterally, where is Yan Ni?
Brazil is hard to beat in its home court, China still needs improvements to have any chance beating Brazil in Rio.

Zhu Ting rarely play a poor match. So I wouldn't start counting the chicken yet. Any team playing home ground is always an advantage but you never know. Saw the match Brazil has played and I can say it is not so impressive but still good.

I think that it is better to share the ball for other members to score rather than just depending on Zhu Ting. However, where is Yan Ni, she is very good in blocking.

WOW! I just checked the score sheet, Zhu Ting still leads the team with 17 points. That's amazing! But her spike % drops to 31.58%.

not volleyball but related. - home court is not the end-all and be-all. don't forget football is brazil's biggest sport and the world cup held in their country last 2014 but germay defeated them 7-1. LOL.

Agreed! USA didn't put in 100% effort, Glass didn't even play much. China needs improvements all around to have a real chance to beat both USA and Brazil in Rio. Best of luck!
