I have just looked at the statistics of 2 matches in the 2010 World Championship, namely Japan vs USA (3rd place match) and Russia vs USA (Semifinal).
Saori had 21 digs adn Soko 21 too.
Saori had 40 receives adn Soko 47.
Saori had 63 spiking atttempts and Soko 31.
For the whole team,
Japan had 128 digs; 90 receives and 173 spiking attempts.
Russia had 113 digs; 75 receives and 116 spiking attempts.
So we will see,
Saori was responsible for 16.4% of digs; 44.4% of receives and 36.4% of spiking attempts.
Soko was responsible for 18.6% of digs; 62.7% of receives and 26.7% of spiking attempts.
It is obvious that, Saori and Soko had more or less the same responsiblity in defending while Saori had 10% more of attacking duty.
Also, I would like to see how much balls their teammates attemptted to spike to see how much "cover" the two players received.
For Japan team, the spiking attempts percentages were: 16.8%; 12.7%; 9.2%; 9.2%; 8.7%; 4.6% and 1.7%.
For Russia team, the spiking attempts percentages were: 38.8%; 23.3%; 4.3%; 3.4% and 0.9%.
From these, we can see that Japan did use the middle blockers more while Russia was bassically about spiking from positions 4 and 2; I would say the Japanese players provided more "cover" to each other.
So, everyone looking at the statistics can make their own decision about who is so-called "better". |
