justin was not playing badly in the quarter final. she would have survived if she had not played maria. but maria was just on fire! it is pretty simple to look into the result. justin hit too many balls into the center of the court. she kind of hoped to overpower maria rather than using angles to push maria into dead run. obviously, she was not powerful enough last night to crush maria. and justin had no variation in her services, and hit way to many services in the center T area. she still had good all court game though. but unfortunately, she sort of lost some feelings of touches in landing a couple of drop volleys. i just do not understand why she did not try to hit the first volley deep and low into the baseline, and waited for a better chance when maria had to hit a lower quality running passing shot.
as for maria, she was simply impeccable last night. she had very effective moves, and her footwork was awesome. she kept hitting winners on the dead runs. apart from her penetrating swing volleys, she had a couple of good low volleys too. i see this as an improvement. it was very hard to jam the ball into maria's body. she always found a way to return those deep shots into impossibly wide angles. and finally, her consistent service motion was back. |
