Ms. Graciela González, wife of Eugenio George, passed away in Cuba
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, January 15, 2007
      It is with profound sadness that we announce the decease in Havana, Cuba, of Ms. Graciela Gonzalez Lopez, the wife of venerable Cuban coach Eugenio George Laffita, after a long illness.
      Ms. Gonzalez Lopez, 64, passed away in the early hours of Sunday and the burial was today following a crowded ceremony presided over by Mr. Leon Richards and Angel Iglesias, vice presidents of the National Institute of Cuban Sport (INDER), informed Mr. Jose Ramon Perez Vento.
      For more than ten years, Graciela was the Technical Director of the Cuban Volleyball Federation and under her supervision the Cuban Volleyball catapulted to the top of the world rankings in both genders.
      She was a frequent fixture in the international volleyball scene as part of the Cuban delegations participating in such events as the World League and the World Grand Prix.
      The family of volleyball led by Mireya Luis and Mercedes Perez attended the funerals as well as also high performance Cuban athletes of several disciplines.
     “She was considered as the Mother of the Cuban Volleyball,” said Perez Vento, president of the Refereeing Commission of the NORCECA Confederation.
     “We want to express our deepest sympathy to Eugenio and the Cuban Volleyball Family after receiving the sorrowful news,” said Mr. Cristobal Marte, FIVB Executive Vice President and President of the NORCECA Confederation. “It is a sensible loss for our sport. God rest her soul.” -- (norceca)
