FIVB World Grand Prix 2007
Match Description
China defeats Poland in the second day of WGP in POland
The fourth match of World Grand Prix in Poland was a long, five set struggle. Poland lost to China 2:3 (26:28 26:24 15:25 25:23 12:15).
Coach Bonitta made only one change in Poland’s starting lineup compared to yesterday’s match: Wing receivers - Swieniewicz and Rosner, opposite – Skowronska-Dolata, middle blockers – Dziekiewicz and Liktoras, setter – Sadurek and libero – Zenik. China started identically as yesterday: Wing receivers - Zhou and Li, opposite – Yang, middle blockers – Xu and Xue, setter – Wei and libero – Zhang.
China started the first set better and were winning 6:8 in the first TTO. Nervously playing Poles engaged their rivals in a head to head fight, going almost equal till a score of 12:13, when they gained four points in a row and won the second TTO 16:13. Polish team captain (this time in the lineup) Dorota Swieniewicz was showing her better side again. Unfortunately for the White-and-Reds, the next six points went for China. It was a point for point fight from then on and the end came no sooner than at 26:28.
The second set begun with a clear domination of the Chinese. They were winning 4:8 and 12:16 in the TTOs, playing definitely better in reception and setting. Polish team didn’t give up and supported with Iza Belcik coming in on the setter’s position managed to go equal 19:19. The strengths seemed evened out and this time the set went 26:24 for Poles, after a thrilling ending that made the crowd stand up and shout.
After a balanced beginning (7:8 in first TTO) Chinese team scored four points in a row and didn’t let that advantage slip out of their hands. They steadily built up that score (10:16 in the second TTO) with strong and quick attacks, which left the Polish block hopeless. The White-and-Reds lost the whole set 15:25.
Coach Chen’s girls couldn’t keep up the momentum of the attack from the previous set and that gave Poland a chance to start the fourth set on their own rules. For the first time they were leading in both TTOs (8:6 and 16:10). Polish fans saw their favorite Dorota Swieniewicz in great action once again. Chinese team was getting closer, which made coach Bonitta call for TOs (at 20:16 and 23:20). Polish girls got really tense in the end and weren’t far from loosing the set but after three set balls the scoreboard showed 25:23 at last.
The tie break was a game of nerves and Chinese team was winning it (5:8 in the first TTO). Although Polish reception was doing quite well, game on the wings was not efficient enough to catch the Asian team. 12:15.
